NotesJohn Dunstaple [Dunstable] is of unknown origins. His early works date from 1410–20, and it is supposed that he may have been musician to John, Duke of Bedford, in the 1420s. He was under the royal patronage of the dowager Queen Joan, widow of Henry IV, in late 1420s and 1430s, and by 1438 had entered the service of Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester. Over 70 compositions survive, mainly in continental manuscripts, and include primarily mass music and motets. His music is mostly in three parts, and intended for vocal performance. He died in London on 24 December 1453.
