Scope and ContentDiaries and notebooks of James Theodore and Mabel Virginia Anna Bent, describing their travels in Africa, Southwest Asia and the eastern Mediterranean. Theodore's notebooks and diaries mainly record information about the geography and history of the places, and details of archaeological work, inscriptions and languages. Mabel's diaries are more anecdotal, being concerned with the logistics of travel, the difficulties and mishaps occuring during the couple's journeys, and her impressions and opinions of the people and places that she encounters.
NotesThe Institute of Classical Studies Library and the Joint Library of the Hellenic and Roman Societies are housed and administered together. Ownership of the Bent diaries rests with the Societies, not with the Institute.
