Scope and ContentThis file contains two bundles of typescripts of sections of Jura Soyfer's (JS) novel, "So starb einer Partei" ("Thus Died a Party"). Both bundles are entitled "Jura's Roman" ("Jura's novel"). The first is labelled "Vorspiel" ("Prologue") and is numbered pages 1-17. The second bundle comprises section 5 of chapter 2 and is labelled pages 71 to 86; this section constitutes the chapter on Josef Dreher: a Social Democratic Member of Parliament. The novel was written between between 1934 and 1937. It is concerned with the politics of the Austrian Social Democratic Party, which had been defeated by Austrofascism in 1934. JS considered this work, which was his only novel, to be his most important piece of writing. Only one chapter of the novel, entitled "Waffensuche", was published while he was still alive: in English translation in the anthology edited by John Lehmann, "New Writing", in October 1936 under the pseudonym Georg Anders and with the English title "The Corner". Another section of the novel, chapter 5 section 3, was published in the same series in December 1939 under the same pseudonym and with the title "A Question of Nerves". It is not known how the script came into the Millers' hands or whether it was used as the basis for any public performance by any of the exile theatre groups.
